Avenue Magazine Launches The Big Idea 2013

MEDIA RELEASE

September 30, 2013 – Building the city of our dreams — now that’s a big idea, and it’s what Avenue magazine’s annual Big Idea issue tackles for 2013. We’re kicking off the October magazine, on stands this week, with a thought-provoking launch event tonight at the offices of Avenue’s parent company, RedPoint Media & Marketing Solutions. We’ll celebrate the Big Idea issue and discuss the intricacies, stories and ideas found within its pages. Joining the Avenue team will be our 2013 Big Idea sponsor, the University of Calgary Faculty of Environmental Design, and guests.

At the core of this year’s Avenue Big Idea issue is an examination of the three cornerstones that create a successful city — urban design, health care and education — and how they combine to make Calgary a more desirable and livable city. The 2013 Big Idea is also about collectively creating the city of our dreams and the things Calgarians can do to cultivate change.

The spark that ignited this year’s Big Idea came last year at the 2012 issue launch event at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design. Through conversations regarding student design projects and how they were intertwined with education and health, the topic was selected.

“In talking with the Environmental Design faculty, we became very interested in the idea that the three cornerstones of a liveable city are education, health care and design,” said Avenue editor Käthe Lemon. “When these three elements come together, the city thrives. And so this is what we decided to explore in this year’s Big Idea. We’re encouraging our readers to get together with others and integrate the concepts into their own communities.”

Added John Brown, associate dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design: “Our faculty and students are committed to helping make Calgary a great place to live. Our continuing partnership with Avenue magazine is an important part of that work.”

The process of collecting information was a year-long effort. Research was conducted in areas ranging from government action, policy and infrastructure to initiatives in the private sector and by individual citizens, looking at all aspects of city-building. Avenue also kept the discussion going through weekly blog posts, the results of which appear in the October issue, on stands this week.
