Avenue Magazine Wins National Magazine Award

MEDIA RELEASE

June 12, 2013 – Avenue Calgary has received a National Magazine Gold Award for a deeply personal story about children with special needs. Craig Davidson’s Precious Cargo, which appeared in the March 2012 issue of Avenue, took home the award for Best Essay.

The story highlights writer Craig Davidson’s inspirational journey as he unexpectedly accepts a position as a bus driver transporting students with special needs. The piece examines the relationships Davidson builds with the kids over the course of the school year, along with the challenges they and their families face related to a variety of conditions including autism and Fragile X Syndrome.

“We are thrilled to see Craig recognized for his very fine writing and storytelling skills,” said Jennifer Hamilton, executive editor of Avenue. “This poignant piece gives readers a unique insight into the complex personalities of kids disabilities and the relationships they develop with the author as their school-bus driver. It’s a beautifully crafted story that’s well worth the 8,000-word read.”

This touching story also digs deep into the chemical and genetic causes of a variety of disorders. The story will also, at the very least, remind you that Calgary’s school buses are carrying “precious cargo,” and to make a little room for them on our busy city.
