Avenue’s Design Competition: Think Inside the Box

February 25, 2011 – While “thinking outside the box” is what inspires most creative design, Avenue asked local designers to do just the opposite. For the second year, Design Inside the Box put forth the challenge to designers to create a home furnishing piece or accessory inside a box – that is, the design had to fall within a four-foot by four-foot space. The piece could be anything freestanding, ranging in size and function from a vase, to a chair, to a lamp, to a bookshelf.
Now that the competition is closed and Avenue’s esteemed judges have chosen the five winning pieces, Avenue invites Calgarians to come see these ingenious designs at BoConcept, who will be hosting the pieces for the month of February.
“Calgary designers continue to amaze and inspire us with their creativity,” says Avenue editor Käthe Lemon. “This year’s entries were incredible, and it was difficult for our judges to select just five winners.”
Viewers also have the opportunity to vote for their favourite design at BoConcept, in the People’s Choice Awards, which enters them for a chance to win “Gifts Inside the Box.” The grand prize for the winning designer, based on the judges’ voting on February 24th at an exclusive VIP event, is a trip to New York City to attend the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in May 2011.
BoConcept is located at 701-11th Avenue S.W., and is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The top five winning entries are featured online and in the February 2011 issue of Avenue Calgary.
