University of Calgary

With the recent amalgamation of several separate faculties under the banner of the Faculty of Arts, the University of Calgary felt a need to communicate the renewed focus and strength of the faculty.

The Challenge

The university approached RedPoint based on our reputation for success in custom publishing for the post-secondary sector. The objectives of the Annual Report included putting an equal spotlight on accomplishments throughout the Faculty of Arts. These accomplishments included books and academic articles published, as well as awards and other achievements. The desired end result was an increase in awareness of the faculty’s reputation and ability to deliver excellence in research and innovative teaching. The “wish list” for the publication included sophisticated and engaging content that avoided academic jargon. The design, photography and colour palette were to reflect the university’s new branding direction, which was under a strict embargo at the time, demanding the utmost discretion by our art direction and production team.

The Solution

Working with the Faculty of Arts communications team, RedPoint rolled out several unique creative concepts. The ideas put forward included a perforated page that readers could construct into a ball, which was initially accepted by the client. With the project underway, internal changes at the university necessitated a change in scope. Working closely with the client, RedPoint adjusted the project parameters on the fly. The end product was a 24-page saddle-stitched booklet, designed for a long shelf life and multiple users. The heavy paper stock and dull gloss finish were specified to ensure the piece would retain a crisp, fresh, fingerprint-free look. The art direction was sophisticated yet friendly and inviting, with a strong focus on people and personalities.

The Results

RedPoint did what we do best, shining a spotlight on the client though strong verbal and visual storytelling. The project was successful by every measure, with outstanding positive feedback from university officials:

• “We’ve been distributing the Annual Report across campus this week and the reception has been fantastic. Thanks to RedPoint for doing such great work for our faculty.”
