Avenue Magazine Announces 2013 Design Competition Winners

MEDIA RELEASE

February 20, 2013 – This year, Avenue received the most submissions in the Design Competition’s four-year history. Five of Calgary’s top design authorities, including Alberta College of Art + Design CEO Dr. Daniel Doz, narrowed the entries down to five final pieces, which are now on display at BoConcept (701 11 Ave. S.W). There, Avenue readers have been placing votes for the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced along with the Grand Prize winner at a VIP reception on February 21, 2013 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

All submissions were required to be functional home décor pieces, including accessories of any size and built-in items — and they were required to be purposeful rather than purely decorative. The competition was a celebration of uniqueness, diversity and originality.

“We are thrilled by the level of enthusiasm this competition has seen, from an unprecedented number of entries to overflowing ballot boxes for the People’s Choice Award. Plus, there are a record number of attendees anticipated at tomorrow night’s reception,” says Ricky Zayshley, Associate Editor of Avenue. “Our team of editors, along with a panel of judges, took a great deal of time to review each submission. It was incredibly difficult to narrow it down to only five. We are very proud of all of our finalists.”

The Grand Prize winner will be announced by WestJet’s Robert Palmer, and will receive a trip for two to Montreal, including passes to the Montreal International Design Show in May 2013. The winner and guest will have the opportunity to tour one of the most beautiful and dynamic cities in the world, known for its rich design culture and creative achievements, as well as its distinctive institutions, restaurants and boutiques.
