Keep up with Calgary

The September edition of Avenue, Calgary’s premier lifestyle magazine, is all about the renaissance of things and people we love — from shopping to sausages, and from a supermodel to a season. Here are some of the ideas, people and places featured in Avenue Calgary’s September 2013 issue.

Shopping: Retail Renaissance

With big American brands coming to town, malls expanding, a high street in every new community and power centres popping up on the city’s far-flung edges, Calgary’s shopping landscape is a state of vibrant renewal.

“Calgary retail is in the middle of a wave of change, spurred on by the recent arrival of several high-profile U.S. retailers. Target and J.Crew are the latest additions to a bevy of American retailers who entered the market in the past few years — Tiffany & Co., Victoria’s Secret, Tory Burch and Anthropologie, to name a few. Nordstrom is next on the list, opening in the fall of 2014 in Chinook Centre.”

Food: Linking Up

Easier than a steak, fancier than a hot dog, sausages come in hundreds of interesting flavour combos, and many are already smoked or cured. Here are a few great butchers around town who will surely “meat” your fall barbecue needs.

“Jan Igras of Jan’s Meat & Deli selects Alberta-raised meats for his Polish-style sausages…. Regina Marr-Fortier has been hand-making her own sausage in her Crossroads Market butcher shop since 1984.… Rose and Joe Meissinger bought Illichmann’s Sausage Shop in Forest Lawn in 1971 after coming to Canada from Austria.… The owners of Spolumbo’s Fine Foods & Deli produce lean Italian sausages using prime Alberta pork and skinless, boneless chicken thighs….”

People: An Eye for Beauty

After years in front of the camera, Calgary’s original supermodel, Lisa Kauffmann, is ready to take the fashion world by storm all over again.

“After I moved from Brazil back to Calgary a few years ago, somebody said to me, ‘Lisa, what do you know? What do you love?’ I replied, ‘Well, I know what it’s like to be a model, and I love fashion.’ It dawned on me. There are so many beautiful girls here in Calgary … they could be models. I know what to look for and I know how to get them prepared, because I’ve been there.”

Trends: Spring into Fall

Springtime usually gets all the glory of real and metaphorical beginnings. But September brings plenty of opportunity to jump aboard new trends and try new adventures.

“Autumn’s cooler weather can prompt many of us to shelve our enthusiasm and quell our energy levels. But, there’s no excuse for hibernating this year. We’ve compiled a list of new things to try in food and drink, fitness, business and philanthropy, guaranteed to put a spring in your step this fall.”

Avenue Events: Best Neighbourhoods Block Party

August’s “Best Neighbourhoods” issue of Avenue Calgary was more than a magazine. It was an event. Literally. RedPoint’s marketing department pulled off an amazing “block party” for thousands of people at Arbour Lake — the city’s best place to live, based on a survey done by the Avenue team in partnership with Leger Marketing. Our people made it look easy, but as always, there’s more to the story….
